Rani Lakshmi Devi Chellayamma Garu was a very efficient ruler. The Madras Gazetteer, the official publication of the Fort Saint George says about the Rani, “Though the lady was very young, aged 20, when the onerous duty of guiding the destiny of large state of Bobbili devolved on her, yet her enlightened policy, liberal heartedness and statesmanship enabled her to excel most of her contemporaries.”

In February 1876, Prince Edward ( Later King Edward VII) as a token of appreciation of the wisdom displayed by her and the service she rendered to the people of Bobbili and her charity towards the people of Bengal during the 1873 famine, conferred upon her the title 'Honourable Rani of Bobbili'.
